Washing Diapers

Washing diapers really is easier than most think. Yes, there will be poop. There will be messes, regardless of what kind of diaper the baby is wearing. The difference is with cloth you simply put the waste into the toilet and then wash the cotton diaper. Let the machine do the work! All the meanwhile, you can say to yourself, "Here is another dirty diaper that's not going to the landfill for 500 years."

  1. Cold rinse
  2. Hot wash
  3. Warm rinse
An extra wash cycle is ok, too. The cloth diapers should smell clean out of the washer. Everyone will have their own way of diaper care. Whatever works for you is fine. Keep in mind washers vary, water varies and laundry soap varies.

Cotton Diapers

New cotton diapers need to be washed in very hot water about 5 times before they reach appropriate absorbency. Hot water is needed to strip the cotton diapers of its natural oils. (Some turn up the water heater to make the process a little easier. Please be careful.)

Cotton Diaper Washing Suggestions:

No fabric softener.

No laundry detergent with "whiteners, brighteners, enzymes, or lasting freshness."

We recommend using a clean rinsing soap like Charlie's Soap.

Store brands often work well, too. They tend to leave out the fancy chemicals.

Sometimes, it may be necessary to add a tiny, tiny amount of bleach to kill the bacteria. Especially after an illness or when odors are out of control.

Rinse the cotton diapers thourorghly. Soap residue will cause odors.

Leave room in the washing machine for the cotton diapers to move freely.

For deep cleaning, use a chlorine-free bleach. Rinse well.

A cold rinse before the hot wash will help minimize stains. Drying in the sun will also help.

A standard top loading washing machine works best. A water saver will work, but with more cycles.

Breast-fed baby cotton diapers can easily be washed without rinsing. Once solid food is introduced, solids are placed in the toilet.
If you're lucky, the poop will fall off the cloth diaper into the toilet. Try different techniques to find one that's suitable.
Some use a spatula to scrape the poop off and then to squeeze excess water out against the bowl. Use a bucket to carry the cloth diaper and to store the spatula.
Or there is the simple Dunk, Swish & Squeeze technique. Nothing too fancy.

Diaper Pail:
We recommend a dry pail-easy to lift, less messy and is not a drowning hazard.

Using a washable liner in the pail means less mess.

The diaper pail doesn't need to be an "official" diaper pail. Any washable container with a lid will work fine.

Who says you can't have 2 washing machines? If money and room allows, a second washer is great! Just throw the dirties right into the washer. When diapering is done, you'll be able to do the household washing faster.
