There are many different styles of cotton cloth diapers.
Flat-- Basic square cloth diapers fold to fit the baby. These are nice because
they wash and dry quickly, and are a one-size cloth diaper. These need to be fastened
with diaper pins,
a Snappi, or worn
with a diaper cover that doesn't require the cloth diaper to be fastened. (Pretty
much any snug fitting diaper cover. ie. Super Whisper Wrap or Bummi
Original.) This style requires a diaper cover.
Prefold--A rectangular shape cloth diaper with multiple layers of cloth. There
are usually more layers in the center. Prefold diapers are available in different
sizes, but will fit for a long time. Prefold
diapers are nice because they are very cost efficient and easy to use, since
they don't require much folding. These prefold diapers need to be fastened with
pins, a Snappi, or worn with a diaper cover that doesn't require the cloth diaper
to be fastened.(Pretty much any snug fitting cover. ie. Super Whisper Wrap or
Bummi Original.) This style needs a diaper cover. Prefold diapers are also the
most popular choice in cotton cloth diapers.
Fitted--These cloth diapers look similar in shape to and fits like a disposable diaper,
only it's a cloth diaper. Fitted diapers will fasten with Velcro or snaps. These
come in more sizes to fit Baby's growing body, can be more expensive, and usually
take longer to wash and dry. Fitted cloth diapers make diapering easy. This style
of cloth diaper needs a diaper cover.
All-in-One--A
fitted cloth diaper with the diaper
cover attatched. These will take a bit longer to wash and dry, but at the
same time are very fast and convenient. This style of organic cloth diapers does not need
a seperate diaper cover.
Diaper
Covers - The diaper covers
are available in fleece, wool and polyurethane coated fabrics. Sometimes they
pull-up. Others fasten with Velcro or snaps (also called a diaper wrap).
How Many?
2-3 dozen cloth diapers
6 diaper
covers
(all in appropriate sizes, of course)
This is enough to wash every
2-3 days.
Laundry basics for washing
cloth diapers:
Empty solid waste into the toilet. If baby is breastfed
only, the organic cloth diapers can go directly to the diaper pail. On wash day, empty
the diaper pail or washable diaper tote into the washer.
Run a cold rinse.
A Hot wash. A second wash or rinse.
